Amazon.com Review

In 1968, cases like that of Mary Bell were almost unheard of. Two little boys were dead, and the two accused killers, Mary Bell and Norma Bell (no relation), were 11 and 13. Norma was acquitted, but Mary was found guilty and sentenced to life in prison. Almost 30 years after her conviction, Mary Bell was able to tell her story, from her troubled childhood to her eventual release from prison as an institutionalized young woman and her awkward attempts to build a life for herself in a hostile world. In Cries Unheard, Gitta Sereny coaxes out Mary's story without becoming an apologist. She is blunt about the brutality of these crimes, and doesn't attempt to dismiss them as the acts of an ignorant child. When Bell gives explanations that don't ring true, Sereny pushes on, refusing to accept the easy answers. The questions raised are wrenching: Can children understand the finality of death? Are they capable of evil? Did Mary Bell understand what was happening to her in the courtroom where she was declared a "bad seed," a child so innately evil that she would have to be locked away for the rest of her life? Was she responsible for her actions at all, or were those responsible for her to blame? While Cries Unheard can't answer all these questions, it dissects Bell's unthinkable acts to the point that we can almost understand them. --Lisa Higgins

From Publishers Weekly

In a searching examination of how children become violent criminals, and how the judicial system treats them, Sereny focuses on the case of Mary Bell. At age 11 in 1968, Bell committed the motiveless murder of two boys, ages three and four, in Newcastle upon Tyne, England. The British tabloids demonized Bell as a "born killer" and "vicious psychopath." But Sereny, who extensively interviewed Bell, her therapists and social workers, portrays Bell, at the time of the murders, as a cauldron of repressed rage and anguish who lived in a grotesque fantasy world dissociated from reality. A prostitute's daughter, Bell was forced to watch as her mother was whipped by clients; she was also sexually abused by her mother's customers. Sentenced to life in prison but released in 1980, Bell, according to Sereny (who covered the trial in a 1972 book, The Case of Mary Bell), today feels profound remorse, sees a parole officer regularly, has a stable relationship with a caring man and is raising a daughter. Sereny's account of Bell's 12-year incarceration is disjointed and overwritten, but it offers a scorching look at British women's prisons as cesspools of drugs, abuse and coerced sex. Sereny (Albert Speer) proposes that children under 14 should not be held criminally responsible and should be tried by a specially convened panel instead of by jury. Her harrowing inquiry, marked by a rigorous and by no means easy exercise of sympathetic imagination, will compel people to rethink how to deal with children who kill or commit other serious crimes. This is an incredible account. I know it is still controversial in th UK, but the story of Mary Bell is a lesson in the rush to demonize any child under 13 who kills. In fact in her story I see parallels with the 12 year olds who tried to kill another young friend in their age group that has recently taken place and known as the slenderman attempted murder case. Just like in Mary Bell's case one girl who was and is considered an accomplice has been all ready given diminished capacity while the other 12 year may be charged as an adult. These cases seem from what I have read scarily similar to the case of Mary Bell and Norma Bell (they are, were not related). I had heard the story of Mary Bell many times before finally finding a first edition for sale in a used book store. The book was brand new with a 1990s Amtrak stub in the book. While I believe some of the authors conclusions on how to protect children and other things incredibly naive!! The book is the single best true crime book I've ever read. It is the story of two disturbed 11 year old girls who had a murder fantasy game they played and tragically acted out in the murder of two little boys who were basically toddlers. Case the name suggests, the girls never really hid their intentions in numerous disturbing incidents that proceeded the murders. They even tried to take credit for the first murder in ways they announced their announced their intentions. Mary Bell's story is compelling because once they caught the girls and had recanted confessions from 11 year old girls. Only Mary was found guilty because the court never learned the absolute horrifying child abuse that was inflicted on Mary by her prostitute mother. Her mother allowed her tricks to pay to have oral sex with her daughter many years before. Before that happened she was repeatedly physically abused, her mother even drugged her to "go out and party", and her mother tried to literally kill her on at least one to two occasions. Even after these abuses Mary tried to protect her mother, downplaying or trying to act like she didn't remember abuse. What she did admit to was hard because she was bound in love, craving love from a mother who always used her daughter for own ends. The author was before her death a highly respected journalist who wrote her first book on Mary Bell from being assigned to it. Mary Bell's extended family told the author many disturbing truths (though one doubts it was full disclosure, for Mary's paternity was clouded with clues that she was most likely the product of incest between her mother and grandfather!). So though you could assume Mary tried to make up excuses for her behavior. The author stressed she never threw her mother under the bus in speaking with her. The hardest things for Mary to talk about were the murders and the unimaginable abuse she suffered with her mother. The only abuse that hadn't been able to cross check was her mother using her directly in prostitution until Mary stood up for herself and made it stop. However her mother came close to admitting that atrocity she committed against her daughter to some who told the author in her cross reference of the things Mary said. It's a fact that in the lead up to the murders Mary began to charge old men coins to look at her naked and more. In addition her mother made it clear she was to accompany her mother when she went off doing tricks, putting Mary Bell at the snapping point. She ran away, she behaved aggressively towards other children. All these signs in 1968, lead to more punishment. So Mary and her best friend at11 began a murder fantasy game made up from WESTERNS SHOWN IN THAT ERA ON TV. Finally Mary snapped. The similarities with the SLENDERMAN attempted murder are chilling. But this book asks us to explore if a preteen understands if they act out murderous games it is forever. MARY BELL STRESSES THAT AFTER SHE COMMITTED HER FIRST MURDER, ALONE.... SHE DIDN'T FULLY UNDERSTAND THAT POOR MARTIN BROWN WAS LITERALLY GONE FOREVER. MARY needed to have been put in a juvenile mental hospital, instead of reform school to deal with her disturbed nature. So did her friend Norma Bell. But in 1968, they didn't have those facilities. Her friend was acquitted and they decided to let her free. In an odd way, things turned out okay for Mary as the only female in the boys reformatting where she finally at her young preteen age met adult mentors if not trained to heal and deal with her profoundlyDisturbed mind with psychotherapy. But just having adults she could love and trust not to hurt her profoundly helped healing her. Upon turning 16, they put her in adult prison where she remained till her schedule one parole. MARY BELL, IS A STORY THAT ALL WHO THINK PRETEENS SHOULD IF THE CRIME IS HEINOUS ENOUGH SHOULD BE CHARGED AS ADULTS. I'M ONLY TALKING ABOUT PRETEENS. After reading this book I researched child killers under 12. In most, they came from highly disturbed Families. This has left me with the conclusion that parents, families, should be heavilyPersonally investigated in these sorts of crimes and the laws should reflect that the child should be taken for extreme psychotherapy and held for as long as MARY BELL. If abuse as extreme is found like with MARY BELL'S case, the parent or parents should face steep consequences. Not all abused kids react like Mary Bell but if you read this book, you should see that her mother's extreme abuse WAS THE CATALYST. Because of this, the parent who is responsible for their kids should face equal consequences for the abuse that led a kid who didn't comprehend her actions in the full IF AN INVESTIGATION PROVES EXCESSIVE NEGLECT &ABUSE OF THE NATURE TO LEAD A CHILD TO BECOME SO DISTURBED.....if your child's a baseball through a neighbor's window or dents car or vandalized it the parent has to pay damages. My argument is in children who murder with a parent like Mary Bell....Well MRS. BELL WAS GUILTY AS WELL AND SHOULD HAVE FACED CONSEQUENCES. even after Mary was convicted, her mother USED her daughter's infamy to give stories on her to fund her life. I see the preteen girls in our country, with people calling them bad seeds. There is no such thing as a bad seed. They are created.

Sad, but good book.

Mary Bell had just turned 11 when she killed two little boys. She did not know what she was doing. She was clearly a product of the worst kind of parenting. This book details the awful events surrounding the killings, Mary's childhood and the trial. The writing is intelligent, clear, sympathetic and detailed. I was riveted the whole way through. As a mother, I am left dumbfounded. I have also read the sequel by the same author, where the horrors of what Mary's mother subjected her to, are explained. My heart breaks for children born into this type of world.

I am far from a book critic, but I really found this book interesting. There were a couple of areas where I got bogged down in, though it did not deter be from finishing it. The subtitle is "why children kill" and while Sereny did address said topic, I got the feeling that it was more of a testament on the failures of the justice system when it comes to child cases. Either way, I found it worth reading.

mad props to gitta sereny for managing to maintain her patience long enough to share all of this information with us!

A little lengthy and drawn out, but very comprehensive. If you are interested in this subject I would recommend the book.

THIS BOOK MAKES ONE RECONSIDER JUDGEMENT AGAINST AN OFFENDER. WITHOUT KNOWING THIS CHILDS PAST WE COULD NOT POSSIBLY MAKE A FAIR JUDGEMENT AGAINST HER.

Doesn't give much background to the case or story of Mary Bell.... you have to already know it (or like me- go on google and look things up as you read the book) it would be nice if the author had put in a summary of the case in the preface. there are bits of information about what happened, all from Mary's perspective and other people from that time who were questioned, but you need to piece it together- it's sort of like you need to already know the case before you begin reading this

Just received my copy of Hacking Growth and I can already tell that it is going to be one of those classic business books that I return to again and again long after reading it the first time. The book is full of incredibly smart ideas for ways to grow your business - no matter what business you are in. What I love the most is that everything in the book is backed up with proof and examples of how these techniques and ideas have been used with proven and repeated success--so after reading this book there is no need to just throw something out there to see what sticks anymore. The book is presented in a smart and thoughtful format, with part 1 covering the method and process of Growth Hacking and part 2 being the playbook for applying the method of Growth Hacking to your specific business. I think the format makes the book easily digestible and I found the writing thorough and the information to be actionable.Simply put, Hacking Growth is a must-read for any marketer, manager, owner, or entrepreneur who is trying to grow their business in today's ever-changing market.

This book is so packed with great ideas and methods it's crazy! If you are looking for a combination of real practical advice, inspiring stories and actual methods- yes actual methods you can start using- you need this book! Did you ever wish you could download someone's brain and experience? Well now you can download Sean and Morgan, it's that good. My book is covered in highlights, pages dog eared, pieces of paper stuck through it, It's become my growth bible, my reference guide and my inspiration. You will read and re-read it, every page is packed with solid advice on each stage of growth, even how to build a growth team and manage experiments. It's a must read if you are into growth and growth hacking!

What I liked most about Hacking Growth was that it gives business owners, managers, marketers-- anyone responsible for growing their own company-- a solid explanation and understanding of what is needed to attain rapid growth and then follows that up with a straightforward framework that can be immediately implemented in your company regardless of your industry. The approach laid out in the book just makes sense-- it's backed by data, focuses on the customer, and can be quickly put into place. The main premise of Hacking Growth and probably my single greatest takeaway is that the companies that learn the fastest, grow the fastest. And the many, many examples in the book make it easy to see how companies take advantage of many small wins over time to build up a big advantage. While I'm not from the tech industry, I truly feel like the authors did an excellent job of showing how this process can apply to businesses of all types, using examples of restaurants and grocery stores in addition to the big name tech companies.I definitely think anyone responsible for results and business growth can benefit from reading this book.

This is a true step-by-step playbook for any growth marketer who wants to drive revenue and grow their business. The authors (leaders of the "growth hacking" movement; one author is the guy who coined the term) set the record straight that "growth hacking" is not a tactic or strategy. It's not a one-and-done hack that will instantly drive a flood of new users. Rather, growth is a mindset and done through a very methodical process by which you run small tests at low risk as fast as possible to generate quick wins, then iterate and grow incrementally. That's exactly what this book teaches. The authors walk the reader through each stage of building a growth machine, give examples from real companies, and, the best part, they apply this process to a hypothetical scenario/product so you can see what it would look like from beginning to end.The steps the authors will walk you through in detail:Part 1 – The Method-Building growth teams-Determining if your product is a must have-Identifying your growth levers-Testing at high-tempoPart 2 – The Growth Hacking Playbook-Hacking acquisition-Hacking activation-Hacking retention-Hacking monetization-A virtuous cycle of growthIf you're looking for a magic bullet that will make your product go viral and save your business, this is not the book for you (sorry, there is no magic bullets in business). However, if you're looking to learn a process whereby you can learn how to design high-tempo tests, find your growth levers, and engineer a long-term growth machine, this is the book for you.I run growth at a venture-backed company in Silicon Valley and consider myself pretty advanced, and I learned a ton from this book. I highly recommend it to anyone in marketing, product, and growth.

I felt that the book was well written, and the authors did a good job of dispelling the myth that "growth hacking" is simply about tweaks to a company's marketing strategy. The book expressed some important concepts related to product-market fit that are often times ignored when conversations about growth hacking take place. It was an "easy" read (in the colloquial sense), and I recommend it for anyone who is in a product manager, marketing, sales, or general analyst role.

Great Read!!! Not being an avid reader a book must cover an interesting topic and be written in Layman's terms. From the first two pages I was hooked. Working in the SAAS space and wondering why some decisions are made by marketing that don't make sense "Hacking Growth" helps make sense of all of it. I highly recommend for anyone in sales who feels like marketing is not listening and making strange decisions. Very thought provoking and easy to understand just how valuable data is and when used properly can help a business grow quickly.
