This book is a must if you are a long time collector or someone who wants to check their pocket change for rare coins. Very easy to use has pictures of what to look for and details about markers and the coin. The spiral bound book is really good to use if you are careful it will stay together amazingly. I have ripped the binding on some pages but nothing noticeable.This book and Strike it Rich Error Coins can be your best friend they have so much info between them and tell you how to get a coin question answered or a coin looked at and even lists places that auction coins.

This review doesn't apply to the book itself which contains useful information. However, what good is that when you can't access the information? As a few other reviews have mentioned the binding on this book is horrendous. Even going through and turning every page one page at a time doesn't do anything towards relieving the problem. As soon as a few pages are turned and then you attempt to return to an earlier section you encounter the same problem with not being able to fully open the pages. Well that's if your extremely lucky because in reality the flimsy paper pulled taunt by the binding simply rips much of the time. This review goes to the letter for the other volume as well as it has the exact same issue going on. It's so bad I can't believe that someone got copies of these books during proofing and actually approved this binding design.

I am new to numanistics so I am trying to read as much as I can. This is a two part ( conveniently titled part 1 & part 2) book that put together looks pretty daunting but is well worth it. Other than the fact I wish I had taken one of those Evelyn wood speed reading classes they used to offer when I was younger it is an excellent book and well worth the effort.

I already had the sixth addition (Pt. 1) and it did an excellent job with pennies, nickels and dimes. Unfortunately, a sixth edition by these two gentleman cannot happen, so I opted for the earlier (Pt. 2) covering quarters and halves. The pictures are excellent and make identification easy and grading as well. I highly recommend this book.

Interesting book. The layout and everything is good but the material for binding could be better. Its sightly hard to open and feels a bit tight. Almost reluctant to open. I recommend this for a first coin collector.

It is a great addition to my growing library of coin collecting books. All though the pictures of the coins are not in color, the black and white photos are very detailed so you know what you are looking for.

This book was everything I hoped it would be. An excellent reference! The hard-covered spiral binding was confusing to me, but when I received it, it was perfect for my needs. The spiral binding allows the book to lay open while referencing different coin varieties.

Others have reviewed this book, and the text may be as advertised; I'm still reading and have not formed an opinion of that. However, the website URL on the book for the "companion website" leads (as of today, still) to a non-existent website. A search of the Focal Press website did not yield a website for this book. I contacted the publisher and was told by them that "at this time no website has been created. The editor of the book says one will be developed, but no release date has been provided." This is unfortunate. The product description describes a "companion website [that] showcases video samples, visual demonstrations of the exercises in the book, and further video explanations of the concepts that are better explained visually." Thus, an integral part of the book is not available. This is unfortunate.

If you haven't been on the set of a "real" motion picture, this books gives a great sense for the process, etiquette and practical requirements of making a movie with a professional crew. The only negative is the author spends a relatively great amount of time discussing traditional film and film cameras. While a new book, I think this part of the content dates it. Yes, I know. Film has more dynamic range and other attributes versus digital images. Those advantages are quickly disappearing. Other than that, fantastic book. Highly recommended.

An amusing read, explaining the details in unintimidating terms. Comprehensive at a beginner to intermediate level. I have been a cameraman for over 20 years, yet was reminded of some important precepts. The inside stories he tells about the biz are fun and instructive. Another good book for beginners is The 5 Cs of Cinemtaography, probably out of print.

If you're really interested in what a director of photography does, this is a great book for you. Covers a lot of what goes on on a set and who does what.

This book is great, but its target audience is limited. The book's subtitle is "Becoming a Cinematographer", and it'll help you to do just that. If you're going into a career in the film industry, and will be working with cameras with the intention of working your way up to be a DP, this is the book for you. If you're doing limited-budget work, and wearing multiple hats (writer/director/cameraman, etc), this book won't serve you well. It's intended to those with big bucks, and most of the tips/suggestions/advice in the book primarily apply to those working on films with a budget of a million bucks or more. The author prefers film over digital media, so there's another strike against it for anyone doing lower-budget stuff. That said, plenty of the tips do apply to anyone working the camera for a production of any size, but there are far better resources available if you're doing what you do on a shoestring.My recommended resources for lower-budget productions include:The Digital Filmmaking Handbook <-- Get this one. It's all-in-one comprehensive, and amazing. Far more practical/useful/universal information here on how to make a film if you're part of a limited-budget production, and want a thorough resource.DSLR Cinema: Crafting the Film Look with Large Sensor Video Cameras <-- This one's also good, and focuses on the role of the camera work using dSLR's. Lots of good tips here as well.

When it comes to books like this, I think it's a safe bet to say that the most pertinent question in need of answering before deciding whether or not to sink your hard earned money is if the information contained within will be useful to you or simply a rehash of things you already know. To that end, I hope to adequately summarize some of the wealth of knowledge contained here and couple it to my own experience with cinematography.I fancy myself a semi-professional still photographer and walk the line between hobbyist and qualified (having provided images for various publications throughout the years). I've long felt that still photographers have a wide variety of useful literature (especially periodicals) at their disposal while videographers are typically left to their own devices. In fact I've often found myself taking techniques such as lens selection, light metering, and depth of field mastery found in the plethora of still photograph magazines I read and doing my best to apply them into the realm of motion-picture making. This works for the most part, until concepts such as framing moving subjects, positioning lights so that they aren't visible in pans, and deciding whether the situation calls for a dolly or Steadicam shot come into play. Then suddenly (as I have no formal training in video photography), I find myself improvising, relying upon instinct and oftentimes, just hoping for the best.Enter Shooting Movies by Jack Anderson. Coming in at 349 pages, this tome manages to pack about as much information in as any college course I'm aware of, and possibly even more in terms of life-experience shared.The author approaches the plethora of useful information presented with a casual, almost conversational style that immediately lays to rest fears of becoming overloaded. As such some of the information here wasn't pertinent to my needs but interesting nevertheless.The author devotes chapters to studying the script, equipment selection (from lighting to camera bodies, lenses to tripods, nothing is left to wonder)- Interestingly there are many pages devoted to the pros and cons of using film cameras versus a digital equipment and though Mr. Anderson professes a bias toward the film side (and discusses the attributes of various film stocks accordingly), he manages to present some level-headed arguments to each side of the coin.Surprisingly, this book relies minimally on photographs, instead slipping a few black & white captures about to demonstrate points of the text as needed. Particularly interesting to me were the movie stills and the scanned call sheets from actual films (in this case Starship Troopers). I can't accurately express the hours I spent studying this information in awe that with so many individuals involved in a single day of shooting, that films ever get completed at all.Perhaps most useful to aspiring cinematographers is the style by which Mr. Anderson breaks all of the information at hand down. He literally separates his chapters into a virtual schedule of the entire process from beginning to end. His 37-chapters span four parts (Preproduction, Production, Postproduction and Technicalities) and are written in such a manner where just about every possible concern (from first day jitters to worst case scenarios like a botched shot) is both presented and reasoned out. It's clear that this is an individual who learned by actually doing rather than simply studying and the ability to capitalize on his experiences is a constant throughout the book.In all, I would be lying if I said this particular book was targeted to the type of filmmaking in which I dabble and the amateur camcorder user looking to spruce up clips of the kids' birthday parties will also probably be a bit out of their league but that doesn't mean this isn't an absolutely fascinating look at the process of filmmaking for anyone and everyone. However, it's the true cinematography student/ apprentice/ wannabe who will get the absolute most out of this work. Thanks to an absolute wealth of practical knowledge coupled to a presentation that takes what could easily be construed as a very stressful job and breaks it down into a whole bunch of easily digestible chunks, this should really be required reading at the university level.

A big disappointment. Most of the photos are black and white, which is a big negative for me. Also, for such a large book, a lot of the photos are small. Some are, for example, 1.5" x 2". The book does have floor plans, which I appreciate. It is a large book, but a lot of space is taken up by text in three languages and some pages have a lot of white space. It could have been so much better.

This book does a nice job laying out Neutra's houses over the years. The pictures could have been a little bigger, but I am not going to pick on that point. It is pretty complete in its breadth.What gets this volume only a 4 star review is the fact that Taschen chose to save money and instead of putting out three different volumes, (one English , one German, one French), they chose to put all three together in one volume!So what you have is a history which could have probably fit into half the amount of pages (and this is a monster volume) but instead is the size it is largely because there are 3 different accompanying texts for each and every building and house in the book. So imagine having a nice picture of one of Neutra's houses and then an English text describing it and then on the following page, two more texts in each accompanying language. This happens throughout the book and because of it I have taken out a star.I wish they would have pointed out this fact before I bought it.On the other hand, if you don't have this book and are a Neutra fan, you should probably buy it.

This book is huge and heavy and hard to hold, but is the ultimate collection of photos (mostly B/W) and descriptions of Neutra and his work. It's written in 3 languages, which means that a lot of the volume of the book (2/3 of the text) is wasted space, though the book is easily 50% photos. A detailed (roughly 15% of the book) nontechinical history, light bio, and analysis is included at the beginning, which is well written for a mass audience (ie, you dont need to be an architect to understand it). There is little to criticize. If you are reading the reviews for this book, that means you are looking for a book on Neutra specifically, and you aren't going to do much better than this.

If you like your books big and heavy, then this book will please you. It is definitely the biggest I've ever bought and putting it on a bookshelf is impossible. But what can you say about its contents. Thorough and complete. To have all of ones work in one book is ambitious, but when done properly, the result is a book which makes all others on the topic redundant. All of Neutra's projects are covered in this book in chronological order. From this you gain a greater perspective of his work, rather than the usual texts which show a few of his greatest hits and always leave you wanting more. One thing you gain from this book is how over a period of 40 or so years Neutra's basic design changed very little, yet was still appropriate to its time and setting. This book is a must have. Just watch your back, it is heavy!!

This is a great reference book for a fan of Richard Neutra's work. Every single built project is addressed. Most projects have narrative, pictures and floor plans. This book exceeded my expectations.

This book is awesome for a fan of 20th century architectural design. Even if you just enjoy good design, you'd appreciate the history and the photographs of this great master's work. The fact that the book is so oversized is a conversation piece in itself reflecting the treasure it holds inside. The cover is made out of actual hardwood, the text is written in English, German and French and most all the photographs are black and white. A true treasure for any collector.

 There's a secret that most artists don't realize: creative block and that pesky inner critic is something we all experience as a creative.Hi, my name is Carrie and today on Artist Strong I'm sharing my top ten takeaways from the book Your Inner Critic is A Big Jerk by Danielle Krysa.The first takeaway is that everyone experiences moments and feelings of insecurity when it comes to their art and their creation process.Danielle Krysa opens the entire book by talking about her feelings of being an imposter as she wrote this book about creative block and dealing with your inner critic. The irony of this is she's written a book about creative block! Danielle talks about that and how that feeling of imposter came out in that book. Yet, we value her work, and the work that she's done with The Jealous Curator, and the exhibitions that she's curated.All of these things have elevated her in the eyes of her audience and other people because she's out there doing the work. Even someone who's out there working, making art and sharing themselves as she is can feel insecurity. It's nice to know that we're not alone, and it's important for all of us to consider how we can then cope with it, if it's part of our creative process.Another piece of advice Krysa offers in this book Your Inner Critic is A Big Jerk, is to reconnect with your inner child.She talks about how as children if you're asked if you're an artist, there's no hesitation, kids just say yes. As adults, if she asks that question, people are hedging, they're trying to qualify what it means to be an artist. We have discomfort around using that word.So, what can we do and what activities can we participate in that would help us reconnect with that sense of play and discovery that was free of judgement? We didn't always judge, something happened in our lives that made us start assessing our work. She talks about how when she was in one of her final critiques for, I believe a BFA in painting, that she was told by her professor that she should never paint again. It's the culminating part of your degree program, you've been studying it for years, and a professor, obviously someone that we hold in a place of esteem or we put on a pedestal at times, literally tells her she should never paint again.For years she didn't paint, and she came to realize that it wasn't his fault, it was hers because she was choosing to listen to him despite an inner desire to still explore the arts.The fourth takeaway that I have for you is about the school of life. Danielle Krysa uses this phrase in her book and I really appreciate it because there are a lot of artists who wonder "Should I have a degree? Do I need a BFA? Do I need a MFA? Is something wrong with me if I'm self-taught? Am I missing something?"We can have a lot of discomfort around this kind of conversation and feel like there's a right and wrong way to answer this question. It doesn't matter what kind of experience you have, the real issue is that imposter feeling again. Is it us wondering if we're good enough, rather that just using the skills and resources and tools that we've developed?I have an example for you that's personal. I, for the longest time, felt like that my Bachelor's degree in Art and Art History, which was a degree in both studio art and art history, put me at a disadvantage to artists who have a full studio program because they had more time in the studio.For a long time, and sometimes even still, my inner critic calls out and suggests that perhaps I'm not skillful enough. Ask yourself how do you deal with that notion of school of life; do you put down your self taught nature, or do you celebrate it? Do you put down your education, or do you celebrate it? Let's realize that each of us can contribute in our own way, and our unique life experience is part of the reason we make the art that we do.The fifth tip is a practical one that is simple and yet I hadn't really thought about it before, but who says you have to work on a blank canvas?Danielle Krysa describes how artists can feel it's scary to make those first marks on a blank surface. She talked to artists who said, "Well fine, I'm not going to use a blank surface. If I feel that kind of intimidation or insecurity around that work, then why not start on something that already has marks on it?"Some people find books at thrift stores or old canvas to work on. Some people work on paint by numbers, it's up to you. There's no limit except the limit we put in our mind about the materials that we use and how we can start.My number six takeaway is to use your jealousy. You should harness any jealousy you feel of other people and their art to help you better and improve your work.Danielle Krysa is the perfect example of this, I'm so glad that she acknowledges this in this book. The Jealous Curator was born because she was feeling jealous about not making herself. Not only has she made wonderful connections and shared those experiences with all of us, she's actually made more art now, because of the lessons she's learned from having those dialogues and engaging with those people. Your jealousy can be channeled into a positive action, it's up to you to make that choice.My seventh takeaway for today is that your inner critic is never going to fully disappear.I don't know a single artist that has an absence of inner critic. You can, however, find tools and strategies to help you cope with your inner critic. If you know that you have an inner critic you struggle to cope with, then this book is a great resource for you. She gives you strategies, ideas, she brainstorms things, and she also empathizes with all of us, because she's been there too.Number eight in today's top ten takeaways is that there's only one kind of failure, in her book and in mine, and that is if you choose not to create.If you make art that you don't like, you shouldn't label it as a failure. That art is informing all of the other future art that you make. The only failure in my eyes, and from my reading of this book, is a choice not to make.If your heart is calling for you to make art, then you should be making art. Something Danielle notes is that when we make this bad art, it actually opens doors to new ideas, it lets us experiment, and it lets us get to the good stuff. It lets us find our artist's voice, and obviously that's something we're all seeking to develop and refine as creatives.Number nine in our top ten takeaways is community is very important for artists.A lot of us work in a vacuum: we work by ourselves in a creative space, we have a little studio or a little table area, and when our family is away or we have some quiet time, we're working on our own. While we need that alone time to do our work, we also need time to connect with other artists.We need to be around other artists who we feel safe around who can give us useful feedback to help us improve our art. That's one reason I've built a community like Artist Strong is I know a lot of us feel like we can't find those connections. Danielle Krysa has also built it with The Jealous Curator. She's got a wonderful community of artists who share, discover, grow and learn together. This has come from her books as well as her showcase of different artists around the world.My last takeaway from this book Your Inner Critic is A Big Jerk is that you need to find your best system to unblock and to get making.For example, Danielle Krysa mentions that as a collage artist, some days she's just not feeling it and all the stuff she makes is making her cranky and she knows she's going to throw it away. It's actually okay and part of the process. She knows if she's feeling especially stuck, that going through all of the books that she has as resources for collage and cutting out figures and images from them can get her going. Then she has some resources so when she's feeling like making she can get going and just make and often doing that triggers ideas for her.You need to figure out what strategies work best for you. Some people need to go outside and go for a walk, or if it's snowing outside go for a cross country ski. While I (an adult artist) found it fluffy and off-putting, this book could make a great gift for an artistically inclined 11-15 year old girl, or a college-aged young woman with tastes just slightly edgier than Live-Love-Laugh plaques. Great illustrations by Martha Rich and a few insights delivered amidst chatty teen magazine reminiscent writing. I was turned off by cutesy subheads and threw in the towel at the "Macaroni Masterpieces" and "Pancake Pictures" segments, but my aunt who teaches grade school and needs a little creativity pep talk will probably love it.

It was a great read. There was quite a few times I was laughing, but the book is very relatable. It's perfect for any type of artist that is scared of the blank page, looking for inspiration, or just needs a good read. I would recommend this book to any artist.

Nothing makes an artist feel worse than allowing their inner critic to take them away from their work. This book helps pull you out of the funk and back to work with confidence! Along with the great info and inspiration, the illustrations by Martha Rich make for a wonderful read!
